Roanoke College now offers Maroon Card on mobile phones and device wearables

Roanoke College is the First Virginia College to Offer Transact Mobile Student ID on Smart Phones and Wearable Devices

PHOENIX AND ROANOKE, VA (Jan. 12, 2022) – Roanoke College students, faculty, and staff can now transform their physical ID cards into a new Mobile Maroon Card to store in a mobile wallet. The Mobile Maroon Card is available for smart phones and wearable devices as a convenient, safe, and secure solution for accessing campus buildings and making purchases. Roanoke College is the first institution of higher learning in the state of Virginia to make this technology available to its students, faculty, and staff. Transact Campus, the leader in innovative payments and credential solutions for a connected campus, provides the Mobile Credential technology that will power the near field communication (NFC)-enabled digital IDs for Roanoke College.

The move from physical cards to a mobile Maroon Card on smart devices allows for safe and convenient transactions, eliminating the need for students to physically touch cards or readers. Roanoke College issued physical Maroon Cards remotely without the need to see students in-person, creating a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly process. The Mobile Maroon Card does not replace the physical Maroon Card and students will be able to use both.

"Adding Mobile Credential is a real game changer in immediately enhancing the experience for students, faculty, and administrators. Mobile Credential brings so many facets of campus into an elegant digital experience, making it efficient and intuitive for all. Congratulations to Roanoke College for bringing Transact Mobile Credential to their campus and for being the first in Virginia to make this happen,” said Rasheed Behrooznia, vice president of Campus ID Solutions, Transact.

The mobile Maroon Card works everywhere you can use the physical Maroon Card. Students can use the mobile Maroon Card to enter residence halls and campus facilities, for meal plans at the Commons or other campus eateries, enter the Belk Fitness Center, access Fintel Library, print documents and attend campus events conveniently and securely. The mobile Maroon Card can also be used to access Maroon Money accounts to make purchases at other convenient locations that accept Maroon Money.

"Our Information Technology team has been working with Transact to bring this exciting new technology to Roanoke's campus,” Terri Fox, Roanoke’s chief information officer, Information Technology, said. “Students already carry their phones everywhere. This allows them to have easy access to facilities, dining, printing, and purchases. We look forward to bringing our Maroon Card technology to the next level!"

Maroon Card on mobile phones and device wearables is also protected by two-factor authentication to ensure only the student can access their own account, even if someone else knows their password.

There is minimal set up required to use the Maroon Card Mobile Credential and most users will be able to begin using it in minutes. For more information, visit https://www.roanoke.edu/marooncard.
